Dopamine is a path toward pleasure

The hormone dopamine also known as the happy hormone is produced in the base of the brain. Insufficient dopamine hormone restricts body movement and is related to feeling low. Dopamine is made from amino acid (tyrosine). So, eating foods such as bananas, pumpkin, soy, dairy products, etc can fulfill the deficiency of tyrosine. This improves brain function.

When you do all the things you love the brain rewards you with the release of dopamine, which makes you feel good. Falling in love, shopping, cuddling a pet, etc gives you pleasure. This feel-good hormone also affects the following functions –

  • Memory and learning
  • Heart rhythm
  • Mood
  • Kidney function
  • The function of blood vessels
  • Body movement
  • Lactation
  • Pain tolerance 
  • Sleep


Serotonin hormone is produced in the center of the brainstem. These hormones act on various body parts to carry out functions such as -digestion, sexual act, breathing, response to stress, response to fear, etc. 

When the hormone is below the normal level it makes a person feel depressed. Anti-depressant medicines work by increasing the level of serotonin hormone. Also, some natural ways like getting sunlight can help increase the level of serotonin. 

Serotonin is also known as the feel-good hormone. It helps keep away anxiety and depression. A little workout, a little sunshine, and a good sleep promote serotonin hormone.


Endorphin hormone is also called natural pain killer. When the body is under pain or stress the pituitary gland and hypothalamus (part of the brain) secretes endorphins to relieve pain. Exercise especially cardio exercise is the best way to increase endorphins. The hormone is released when we laugh, have sex, or eat a tasty meal.  


The hormone is produced in the hypothalamus and released in the blood by the pituitary gland. Oxytocin is also called the love hormone because the hormone has a major role in childbirth. It is commonly known for bonding and attachment. The hormone level increases with intimate touch, cuddling, kissing, etc. 

A low level of oxytocin hormone may cause depression and postpartum depression. Oxytocin supplements have worked to ease anxiety and depression.

Ways to boost happy hormones naturally

Various activities can help you boost all four happy hormones. these include exercising, being with the loved one, cuddling your pet or your loved ones, listening to music, taking a nap, engaging in activities that you love to do, meditation, etc. 

There is no standard list of things that can promote happy hormones. Choosing the activities that make you happy is the way to increase happy hormones.
